BMP-3
The BMP-3 is a Soviet and Russian armoured tracked combat vehicle designed to transport personnel to the front line, increase their mobility, armament and protection on the battlefield in conditions of nuclear weapons use and joint actions with tanks in combat.
The development of the BMP-3 (‘Object 688M’) was started in 1977. In 1983-1986 tests were conducted and in 1987 it was adopted for service with the Soviet Army. During the state trials near Cape Opuk, two prototypes of the BMP-3 had to fire a 30 mm automatic cannon at coastal targets at a range of up to 1,500 metres while afloat. The target was a T-55 tank. As a result, the tank’s sight and observation devices were disabled, the 100 mm gun was penetrated in 4 places, and the upper frontal part was fractured with cracks. It was first demonstrated to the general public at the parade on 9 May 1990.
The BMP-3 won the tender and entered service with the UAE Army in a quantity of over 600 vehicles. These
vehicles were equipped with a French-made thermal imaging sight, the same sight used on the UAE Army’s main battle tank, the Leclerc-Tropic. The armoured vehicle has also been purchased by a number of other countries. The vehicle showed the highest performance in the firing tests after the run, with a 2,000 kilometre journey.
The BMP-3 has travelled unlike British and American vehicles.
In 1997, the PRC acquired a licence to produce the BMP-3 fighting compartment, which was subsequently used to arm the Chinese ZBD-04 infantry fighting vehicles.
