Virginia Class 1990s VLS Upgrade (NTU)
The Virginia class nuclear cruisers were a class of four, of the originally planned 11 ships, serving with the US Navy from the late 1970s into the early 1990s. From their inception, it was considered to arm the Virginia class with Mk41 VLS and potentially AEGIS, however, due to size contraints, time constraints, and budget constraints, they were ultimately built as standard double-ended Mk26 cruisers. The Mk41 conversion was again proposed in the late 1980s and early 1990s, but the end of the Cold War struck down any chance of this occuring, but what if it didn’t? This mod seeks to explore a world where not just four Virginia Class ships were built, but nine, and in which they recieved the Mk41 systems they rightfully deserved. Starting from CGN-42, Alaska, through to CGN-46, Illinois, the additional ships serve to bridge the gap from CGN-41 to CG-47, and give additional ships for the fleet. Included here, alongside the additional ships in class (with appropriate hull numbers shown), it also includes two variants of the VLS armed Virginia, one with 122 cells, and one with 183 cells. Both come armed with a mixture of Standard and Tomahawk missiles to make the Virginia class far more potent and even more dangerous than they already are. Additional ships in class include CGN-42 Alaska, CGN-43 Hawaii, CGN-44 Montana, CGN-45 Nevada, and CGN-46 Illinois, all with appropriate hull numbers.
