Yang-class MOD III DDG with MD500/ASW
It’s the 70s. Missiles are starting to dominate the seas one step at a time and you’re an island nation surrounded by the sea but all you got are WW2-era destroyers to defend yourself. You would have liked to buy a new batch of DDGs from the US but you don’t have the budget, so what can you do?
Presenting you the Republic of China (Taiwan) Navy’s Yang-class destroyers that went through the Wu Chin(武進, short for "weapons upgrade") III project, using the Gearing-class FRAM I as the base and mounting it with modernized weaponry.
First time actually "modding" something so might be buggy, feel free to notice me of anything in need of change.
Features:
———–Yang-class MOD III DDG———–
Compared to the Gearing FRAM I:
– Added one MD500/ASW Defender helicopter to the hanger (See below for features)
– Added four Hsiung Feng II (HF-2) surface-to-surface missiles (See below for features)
– Added ten SM-1MR box launchers
– Added two Bofors 40mm guns
– Added one Mk15 20mm Phalanx CIWS
– Added ESM and ULQ-6 early ECM to mimic the Chang Feng III ESM/ECM.
– Added W-160 fire control radar (did not add model in game)
– Changed the Mk37 radar to STIR-180 fire control radar
– Changed the SPS-29 radar to DA-08(2) air and surface search radar
– Changed the SPS-67 radar to SPS-10 surface search radar
– Changed the SQS-23 sonar to DE-1191 (No change in preformance in game)
– Changed the front gun from 127mm Mk38 to 76mm Mk75
– Removed the 127mm Mk38 rear gun
– Removed the extra magazines of the ASROC
Be aware that the SM-1 launchers are fixed mounts so they have limited fire arcs and due to FCR limitations you can only guide 2 weaponry at a time, not to mention you only have 10 SAMs and they are scattered around. On the plus side they are box launchers so no prep time is needed before they can launch.
———–Hsiung Feng II (HF-2) AShM————-
Compared to the Harpoon:
– Greater distance (80nm instead of 65)
– Smaller warhead (190kg instead of 221)
– Different flight characteristics
>Cruise high when launched further than 80km(~43nm)
>Start sea-skimming at 43nm
>Drop even lower at 15nm
>Aims for the waterline, does not pop-up like the Harpoon
The sea-skimming phase should be similar to the Harpoon, while the terminal flight performance should be similar to the Exocet, in game uses the Harpoon model.
———–MD500/ASW Helicopter——————-
Compared to the MD500:
– Removed wing hardpoints for rockets/guns
– Added RDR-1300 surface search radar
– Added AN/ASQ-81(V)2 Magnetic Anomaly Detector
– Added two belly hardpoints for Mk46 torpedoes
The Magnetic Anomaly Detector is pretty hard to be useful as you need to directly fly above a shallow sub to actually spot it, so I believe this heli is more useful in the surface spotting role in game using the radar.
By the way this heli never mounted more than one torpedo IRL as mounting two greatly limits it range and stability, but it does have the hardpoint for it to do so.
