Tricolors Over Milan
In 1848, revolutions are happening all over Europe; with Austria weakened by the recent Hungarian revolution, Sardinia-Piedmont spearheades the Italian Risorgimento by advancing in Lombardy with the excuse of "reducing" Austria’s size and power. All other italian states support Sardinia-Piedmont in their war efforts, especially the Republic of Two Sicilies, recently formed after the Sicilian revolt in 1848. France is also involved in the conflict: in the treaty of Plombeirs, Sardinia-Piedmont and France agreed on an alliance in exchange of France getting the region of Savoy.
After winning several battles, most of which were thanks to General Garibaldi, Sardinia-Piedmont and France signed the treaty of Villafranca together with Austria. Changes include the annexation of Lombardy by Sardinia-Piedmont and the establishment of a free Venetian state.
In June of 1849, steps will be made towards a full unification with the annexations of the duchies of Modena, Parma e Reggio and Lucca by Sardinia-Piedmont; in July, Tuscany joins aswell and the region of Romagna revolts and declares independence from the Papal States. Pope Pius IX decides to let them go, focusing rather on avoiding other independist movements in his territory getting traction, and so Romagna too joins Sardinia-Piedmont. In October it’s the Republic of Two Sicilies’ turn to unite, leaving only the Papal states controlling the regions of Marche, Umbria and Lazio, dividing the penisula in 2.
During the "Brothers War" of 1856, Italy manages to extend it’s territory by taking Trentino after allying with Prussia. But the penisula would not be united until April 1859, when French garrison troops stationed in the Papal states have to leave to support their war against Prussia, prompting Italy to march, occupy and annex the Papal States, finally uniting the penisula.
After several administrative reforms and defeating brigandage, in 1861 the Italian Kingdom is a stable nation with an efficient government, prompting colonial ambitions: in fact, with already established settlements in Tunisia, Italy assumes a strong position over North Africa, setting ambitions for Tunisia, Lybia and Egypt.
