1982: Airborne Assault
On May 1st 1982, taking advantage of International Workers’ Day’s national holiday, a part of the East German armed forces have risen up against the regime in Berlin in a failed coup attempt, but the country has been divided between supporters of the regime and the rebels. In response, West Germany, backed by NATO, has assisted the rebels militarily in the hope of overthrowing GDR President Erich Honecker and starting the process of the long waited German reunification.
Faced with this situation, the Warsaw Pact launched an offensive on German soil to crush the uprising and prevent the fall of the communist government in East Germany. The escalation of the conflict was completely inevitable, and everything indicates that an open war between NATO and Warsaw Pact forces will break out. Finally, the action plans that both sides had devised to deal with the event of a conventional war have been put into practice, but the world wonders if either side will resort to the nuclear option…
Our combined forces are already making their first moves to counter the threat of the Atlantic alliance. One of the fundamental strategic objectives is the effective control of the Baltic Sea and its islands. Airborne forces of the Soviet 56th Guards Air Assault Brigade will launch an air assault on the Vadheim Island airfield, under West German and Danish control, to support the amphibious assault of the Polish 35th Gdansk Assault Regiment. Our objective is to have the airfield under control and occupy the island’s capital town, Vadheim, a few kilometers away, to surround the Danish forces between Arendal and Lena, to the north of the town.
Take the role of a rifleman in a VDV heliborne squad tasked with storming the enemy positions in a surprise attack against Danish and West German forces. It’s a somewhat simple mission with open fields combat and some CQB. I tried to give the mission the most historically accurate aesthetic as possible with the equipments of both Soviet and NATO forces, with the splendid Jamies Basics mod.
