A 1:1 scale replica of what Livyatan melvillei might have looked like (Livyatan is the Hebrew spelling of Leviathan). The name was inspired by the biblical sea monster Leviathan and Herman Melville, the author of the famous novel Moby-♥♥♥♥.
Livyatan melvillei lived between 12 and 5 million years ago. Its total length has been estimated to be about 13.5–17.5 meters (this one is 16 meters), similar to that of the modern sperm whale, making it one of the largest predators known to have existed. The teeth of Livyatan melvillei measured 36.2 cm, making them the largest biting teeth of any known animal.
Livyatan melvillei might have been a predator of Megalodon, as they lived at the same time and inhabited the same waters.
