The T-34-85 was a Soviet medium tank introduced in 1944 as an upgraded version of the original T-34, featuring a more powerful 85mm ZiS-S-53 gun and improved armor to counter the German Panther and Tiger tanks during World War II. Retaining the excellent mobility, sloped armor, and rugged reliability of its predecessor, the T-34-85 featured a larger, three-man turret, allowing the commander to focus on battlefield awareness rather than operating the gun. With a V-2-34 12-cylinder diesel engine producing 500 horsepower, it reached speeds of up to 55 km/h and had a combat weight of around 32 tons. Mass-produced in the tens of thousands, it played a crucial role in the Red Army’s final offensives, remaining in service with various nations for decades after the war.
