Age of Civilization
TLDR
This mod adds a historical culture along with tomes reflecting the various human eras from ancient to information, somewhat mimicking a civ game with AOW4 mechanics.
Note that your starting units are very weak, since you’re starting in the stone age while everyone else is medieval and has magic. As you progress, eventually your technology will catch up and surmount everyone and everything.
Features
- 7 New “Era” tomes representing the various significant eras of human history: ancient, classical, medieval, renaissance, modern, atomic, information
- A new Historic Culture meant to be played exclusively with the new “Era” tomes to simulate discovering new technologies and building up a civilization from the stone age to the information age
- City upgrades that are actually unlocked by technology (e.g. library only unlocked after researching writing)
- Various customized units (though many units still use “reasonable” placeholders)
- Mana interpreted as “social capital” (think vaguely paralleling civics in Civ6) and spells representing “social movements” such as the Enlightenment, industrialization, Nuclear Program, etc.
- Fantasy vs modern warfare
- Aircraft resistance: to mimic the futility of ground units attacking aircrafts, aircrafts have significant defense/resistance against ground units but not flying units
Known Bug
- Do not choose enchanted crow companion research as that messes up the research pacing (still figuring out how to remove it)
- Only tested on human race
Missing Features
- Custom models for more units, especially from the modern era and later
- Independent cities, vassals of the historic culture don’t do anything
- Disable all other tomes for the historic culture (so AI can hopefully play it properly)
- Early mana usage
- Early era units (automatically?) evolve to late tier units
Interesting Scenarios (from my own playtesting)
- Caused the Great Chinese Famine[en.wikipedia.org] after industrializing a city caused mass starvation due to decline in food output
- Had an army of demonkin (flying) take down a squadron of fighters
