HISTORY LESSON

The Chevrolet Impala debuted in 1958 as a top-tier model in Chevy’s full-size lineup, quickly becoming a symbol of American automotive style and success. By the early 1960s, the Impala had established itself with its distinctive "triple taillight" design and a balance of performance and comfort. Over the years, it became Chevy’s best-selling model and a cultural icon, particularly in car customization scenes.

The 1964 Impala represented the final year of the third generation. Known for its clean, squared-up lines and slightly more restrained styling than earlier models, the ’64 kept the hallmark triple taillights and introduced subtle tweaks like a more angular body shape and a new grille design. Available as a hardtop, sedan, convertible, and wagon, it offered engines ranging from the basic inline-six to the powerful 409 V8, immortalized in the Beach Boys’ song "409." The ’64 model was also praised for its comfortable ride and was a popular choice for customization, especially in the emerging lowrider community.

Rap Culture & Lowrider Legacy

The 1964 Impala’s legacy grew beyond car shows and garages-it became a central figure in West Coast hip-hop and Chicano culture, thanks to its dominance in the lowrider scene. Its long, flat body and solid frame made it ideal for hydraulic suspension systems that allow dramatic car hopping and smooth gliding. Rappers like Dr. Dre famously spotlighted the ’64 in his 1992 track "Let Me Ride," which directly references cruising in a 1964 Impala. Ice Cube, Eazy-E, and Snoop Dogg also frequently featured Impalas, visually and lyrically, tying the car forever to the visual language of hip-hop videos and the cruising culture of Los Angeles.
