Legacy of Rome – Road to Darkness
This was a scenario I made in Age of History II and III on what if Byzantium survived. The following is the lore for WWII:
The Eastern Roman Empire, an empire which has persisted for nearly 1.5 millennia, is once again faced with a major predicament. Following the Imperial Peace that ended the First World War, Communist regimes have sprung up around Europe, vowing to spread the Revolution. The Bolsheviks in Russia, the PCF in France, the CPGB in Britain and the Hungarian Communists have all pursued closer relations in an attempt to topple the members of the former Alliance of Emperors.
In the East, Rome’s ancient enemy, the Persian Empire, is beginning to rearm and mobilize its forces to reclaim its Mesopotamian, Arabian, and Afghan lands as the Pahlavi Dynasty overthrows the Qajars. In India, the Bharati Revolution has grown cold as the Mughals have entered into a ceasefire agreement with India. The Qing Empire, once known for its internal instability, has begun to democratize and federalize. Its neighbor Japan, content about its holdings in South East Asia (for now), is focused on peaceful coexistence with the Asian brothers.
In the Americas, the former European colonies of the Caribbean have federalized to maintain independence. The USA, neutral in WWI, is grappling with the rippling effects of the Great Depression. Mexico, suffering from its defeat in Guatemala by the hands of the newly unified Central America, is also in a tough position. Further south, the federations of old have crumbled. Peru and Bolivia have reconciled their differences but remain separate nations. Gran Colombia, unable to cope with its own internal issues, collapsed in 1929 when Venezuela successfully fought for its own representation as an equal state.
How will the world progress as the nations progress down this Road to Darkness? Will Communism triumph over the Imperial Powers in Europe? Will China and Japan emerge as even Greater Powers? And is the future of the Americas certain? Only time will tell.
