Luxembourg Armed Forces: 198X
Luxembourg, one of the smallest countries in Europe, is a founding member of NATO. Due to its small size, it is largely overlooked by other nations, but has contributed troops various UN and NATO missions. During the 1980s, had the Cold War gone hot, Luxembourg would have supplemented the Belgian Armed Forces in operations to push the Warsaw Pact back East of the Inner German Border. With an army of approximately 900 volunteer soldiers, Luxembourg specialized in light infantry operations with light mortars and anti-tank weapons.
Supplied by the US with equipment since the 1960s, Luxembourgish forces looked much like their American counterparts in the 1980s using American-supplied uniforms, webbing, and vehicles, but mostly sporting the weaponry of its neighboring Belgium.
Currently, the mod is a fully-configured (albeit somewhat poorly) faction. It contains the uniforms and equipment appropriate for the units. It retextures vehicles from SOG to reflect Luxembourgish vehicles based on photographic evidence from the 1970s and 80s. It utilizes turrets from CSLA. GM is for the Uzi as well as German voices (German is used somewhat commonly in the country, and Luxembourgish was widely considered to be a dialect of German until the 1920s). Free World Armoury provides the infantry weapons due to them being a full set of weapons (aside from the Uzi) for Luxembourg and generally being well-balanced stat-wise.
If you don’t like these dependencies, but still want the equipment, hop into the addons folder and delete dg_lux_84u.pbo.
The uniforms support ranks, but must have S&S co-loaded for them to be used. I omitted a hard S&S dependency because of the DLC dependencies.
I have a few ideas, but nothing earth-shattering. If I figure out what backpacks they used, I’ll add what I can. In 1985, Luxembourg began transitioning to BDUs and adopted the HMMWV in 1986. I may add those things. I will likely add M1923 webbing because that gear was still in use in the 80s and would have likely seen use in a WW3 scenario. Luxembourg also had an agreement with Britain to receive L118 105mm guns in the event of war; so I may port the M119 (an Americanized L118) from Arma 2 into the mod for this purpose. Lastly, the only vehicle that Luxembourg used in the 1980s that is missing from Arma altogether is the Land Rover 101FC. I possess a model, but I have no idea how to config a vehicle, so we’ll see if that ever gets added.
Special thanks to Simcardo, Justin N., Motta, Jujurat, and the rest of Goonworks for making the original models and allowing me to edit, repack, and otherwise screw with them.
Thanks to Eugen Systems for making WARNO, the inspiration for this mod, and a decent source of information about the LAF.
Thanks to the users of MilitaryImages.net, who maintain a library of images of the Luxembourg Armed Forces, which provided the photographic references for the uniforms and vehicles.
Thanks to whoever maintains the Equipment of the Luxembourg Armed Forces page on Wikipedia, which includes former equipment–while not a complete list, it did provide help.
Thanks to the developers of GM, CSLA, and SOGPF for the vehicles, weapons, and turrets that support this mod.
Thanks to TepacheLoco for FWA (and unrelated to this, but Spearpoint as well).
All models were made by Goonworks with limited edits by Delta-Gamma (me).
New textures for vehicles and equipment were made by Delta-Gamma.
Configuration packages were written by Delta-Gamma (who was taught by Lukin); DMOrchard’s vehicle config files were referenced (and largely misunderstood).
Did I miss anything?
– Some vehicles spawn with SOGPF passengers; I haven’t figured out how to fix this yet
– An error message appears when opening the editor; not sure what’s causing it because it refers to the CfgEditorCategories entry, which is written in accordance with the BI format
– Editing vehicles in the garage removes the custom textures; this is a matter of me not knowing much about vehicle texturing, but I hope to resolve this in the future
