Description:

This is a reworked (NEW!) version of Park Chung-hee, to celebrate the release of the Great Builders pack.

The old version is renamed as an alternative persona, Park Chung-hee (Yushin). You DON’T need to subscribe to both versions to make it work (although you can if you’d like to).

I would strongly suggest to try out the reworked version: it is more fun to play (hopefully) and is more in line with his overall historical contribution, especially his image in his first decade of ruling. Enjoy! 🙂

Introduces Park Chung-hee, the authoritarian leader of Korea.

Park was the 5th to 9th President of South Korea, from 1963 to 1979, and the de-facto leader after the May-16th Coup in 1961, from 1961 to 1963. He is one of the highest-rated President in the history of South Korea, for him beginning a series of economic reforms that eventually lifted South Korea out of poverty and led to rapid economic growth and industrialization, now known as the Miracle on the Han River. He is also criticized for his authoritarianism and dictatorship, suppressing democratic movements and ignoring labor rights.

He leads the Korean Civilization in-game.

Park Chung-hee (Korea)

Trait: Miracle on the Han River
Cities with an international trade route will automatically establish trading posts in your cities within 7 tiles. Korean cities with an established trading post can build Industrial Zones, Aqueducts, Dams and Industrial Buildings in half of time, and these Industrial Zones receive a major Adjacency bonus from adjacent City Centers (displayed in the City Yields).

Agenda: For My Country and My People
Will emphasize on Production. Likes Civilizations with high Production. Dislikes Civilizations with low Production.

This mod requires Rise and Fall.

Disclaimers:
This mod is meant to provide additional content into the game and does not mean to express support for or opposition to any political opinions.
This mod is meant to reflect President Park Chung-hee and his policies within his tenure (1961-1979), not the entire South Korean Civilization.

Creater’s Thoughts (some random mumbling):
Since the release of the last version, I’ve grown to feel that there is a certain degree of "Western bias" in my original design. I have always adhered to an "empathetic" standpoint in making these mods, and it was and still is the principle that I adhere to. However, when you’re writing a description for any historical figure, you will inevitably have to take a standpoint, implicitly or explicitly. I’ve grown to feel that the English-speaking world perspective which, simply puts President Park as an "authoritarian dictator" and sometimes even a "brutal dictator", do have a fair point but is with a certain level of implicit arrogance. Western opinions tend to fail to recognize how difficult it is to raise a nation from poverty to an advanced economy, especially considering what a mess the Syngman Rhee administration left for him. It would be unfair to simply dismiss him as simply a "dictator" (and thus a "bad guy") with the enormous challenges that South Koreans faced at the time.
From the Gameplay perspective, I also feel that my previous design is a little lackluster. I have received much valuable feedback on the previous version, and it is generally recognized that with Seowon’s high adjacency bonus, every other district will be pushed further down in the construction queue. Without immediate yields from the Industrial Zone bases, many choose to play him just as Seondeok and complain about the amenities debuff. After Sejong’s release, I feel that it is not too much to give President Park some additional productivity bonuses, so that he can be more useful (and more fun to play!) compared with Sejong.
So I made a new version of him. My idea is mainly around an export-oriented economy; this version of Park Chung-hee is closer to the period of the Third Republic when everything had just started, so the production bonus is placed on Industrial Zones rather than industrial buildings.
Nevertheless, I should point out that I didn’t deny his faults. As a complete reflection of its historical merits and demerits, I still keep the original version of Park Chung-hee as another persona, renamed Park Chung-hee (Yushin), which I hope to reflect controversies on him, especially during the later years of his life.
I have to admit that as a non-Korean, my perspective will never be completely unbiased, and all I can do is do my best. I hope you find the new version better and more importantly, hope you enjoy the gameplay with this mod 🙂
