Map of the Swedish province of Ingermanland (Ingria), which existed until the beginning of the 18th century. Its history is interesting, since several peoples coexisted in this territory: Izhorians, Swedes, Finns, Russians, Estonians and other indigenous peoples. From the south, the province bordered on the Russian Pskov and Novgorod veche republics, with which active trade and cooperation was conducted.
In the Middle Ages, for several centuries Ingria was part of the Novgorod lands, but then it went to Sweden. The capital of the province of Ingermanland (Ingria) is a fairly large city with a stone fortress Nyen. It was part of the Hanseatic League, which included the Baltics and Pskov with Novgorod.
At the beginning of the 18th century, as a result of the Northern War, on the site of the Swedish city of Nyen, they began to build the city of St. Petersburg, which became the capital of the Russian Empire, but the history of the peoples inhabiting Ingria did not end there.
