New Playable Race, Blendecs
About the mod:
This mod introduces a (playable) race of goat people known as blendecs. Blendecs are of course related to the ‘foul blendecs’ that can be found in the vanilla game, and, lore-wise, are the same species, before they were corrupted.
Difficulty
Overall, blendecs are more challenging to play than a dwarven fortress or adventurer, mainly for the following reasons:
-Blendecs are smaller than dwarves (0.75 x dwarven size) making combat more challenging.
-Blendecs are unable to produce steel from iron ore.
-Blendecs have no access to adamantine strand extraction, (and thus adamantine items!) but they can use raw adamantine for other purposes.
-Blendecs forge large daggers and obsidian spears, rather than short swords.
-Blendecs are short lived, with a max age of 25-30 years. They become adults at the age of 5.
Blendec advantages;
-Blendec children grow up to be useful members of society in only five years.
-They can extract an elixir from raw adamantine that can be used in a healing ceremony, this even regrows lost limbs and cut nerves. To do so, grind raw adamantine at the new stone grinder workshop, and extract elixir from it at the new alchemist’s workshop. Finally, you can hold a healing ceremony with the elixir at the new high altar workshop.
Due to the way vanilla DF works, there is a chance for the spell to fizzle. Basically what the spell does is create a cloud of healing gass that if inhaled heals the unit. Since apparently, creatures can hold their breath long enough, they will often escape the effects.
For the highest chance at success, have the blendec that you want to be healed do the job, any other wounded blendecs on the workshop area have a chance of being healed too, so it is best to clutter the workshop with as many wounded as you can. Testing indicates indoor workshops have a better chance for an effect, still, it might take a few tries! Even if the spell fails, you still get a religious talisman that you can trade away or keep.
Strategy tips:
Because blendecs are quite weak, you likely have to trade with other races to obtain steel, and you will benefit greatly from enlisting larger races into your military by integrating visitors in your fortress.
Credits:
I made the art for this mod myself (no AI), however for part of the clothing I edited sprites from Bay12’s art to fit blendecs, rather than draw new clothing from scratch.
I used Talvieno’s language generator (DFlangcreate) to make the blendec language.
Future plans:
short term likely some fixes and improvements to graphics, in the longer term I might add some corruptions or secrets that will connects blendecs more closely to the foul blendecs of the vanilla game.
