Donbass 2014 – Exposition
*** Warning ***
The events in the mission are mostly fiction. The impossibility of transferring the events of those years qualitatively forced me to do it as I did and also write the reference above.
***Brief and Rough Historical Excursion***
The war in Donbass is a military action in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions of Ukraine that began on April 12, 2014, with the capture of Slavyansk by a detachment of Russian militants under the command of former FSB officer Igor Girkin-Strelkov. Supporters of Russia in eastern Ukraine were inspired by the example of Russia’s rapid seizure of Crimea and hoped for the imminent arrival of the Russian army; they seized administrative buildings in Kharkov, Donetsk, Mariupol, Luhansk and other cities during protests. As a result, on April 7, Acting President of Ukraine Oleksandr Turchynov announced the creation of an anti-crisis headquarters and that "anti-terrorist measures will be taken against those who have taken up arms." According to the OHCHR, from 2014 to 2021, the war in eastern Ukraine claimed the lives of an estimated 13,200 to 13,400 people, including 4,200 Ukrainian military personnel, 5,800 Russian and pro-Russian forces, and 3,390 civilians killed, as well as 29,600 to 33,600 wounded military personnel and civilians on both sides. Ukraine registered 1.6 million refugees who were forced to flee their homes. On 13 April, the National Security and Defense Council adopted a decision on "urgent measures to overcome the terrorist threat and preserve the territorial integrity of Ukraine", which was approved by Turchynov’s decree on 14 April. Until the end of April 2014, the confrontation between pro-Russian forces and the Ukrainian military was limited to occasional skirmishes, raids, and attacks on checkpoints using small arms and artillery at medium and close range.
**Quote**
"I pulled the trigger of war after all. If our unit had not crossed the border, everything would have ended up like in Kharkov, like in Odessa. There would have been several dozen killed, burned, arrested. That would have been the end of it." – Igor Ivanovich Strelkov
