Sake and Masisi, North Kivu
Sake and Masisi are cities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the province of North Kivu. The Terrain west of Sake is mountainous and features many valleys. South of Sake is the city of Minova, which is in the South Kivu province. Le Mouvement du 23 Mars (M23) in the recent 2022 offensive has taken over both cities including Minova, and are expanding westward. Les Forces Armées de la République démocratique du Congo (FARDC) et la Mission de l’Organisation des Nations Unies pour la stabilisation en République démocratique du Congo (MONUSCO) are fighting against M23 because of war crimes and abuses against civilians, and to maintain Congolese territorial integrity. M23 has received extensive support from Rwanda, and have been described as, "a non conventional army" by former South African army general, Maomela Moreti Motau, after seeing visuals of M23 rebels who overran Goma with advanced weaponry and equipment. According to Al Jazeera, representatives from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and M23 have signed a declaration of principles in Qatar to end fighting in the eastern Congo. Peace negotiations are to start no later than August 8, giving both parties 10 days to finalize a deal, assuming the August 18 deadline is not delayed.
This map is 39.936×39.936km (1594.884km2) and was created using GameRealisticMap and high resolution satellite imagery, sourced from MapTiler flex. This map includes many cities and towns, stretching from Minova, to Sake, and all the way to Masisi. There is dozens of valleys and mountains in the western part of the map. The Sake MONUSCO base has been made to an extent to similarly reflect the real area, but is not 100% accurate due to asset limitations, pictures, and outdated satellite imagery, which does not accurately show the entire base currently, as seen on Google Maps. There is clouds that are a part of the satellite image that I cannot remove. As a disclaimer, since this map is extremely vast and has millions of objects, it is recommended to use this map on a high-end computer as my computer could barely function on the map with 2 kilometer view distance and took an hour and a half to two hours to open the map from the menu. Saving scenarios and reopening them on this map also takes a substantial amount of time. Due to this map’s performance and size, no further changes are to be made regarding this map. I apologize for the excessive amount of trees, but there is no going back.
