Description:

Nomina Vera (Latin, ‘true names’) is a mod I’ve been maintaining for personal use for many years. It changes the game’s localisation files to relocalise titles from the generic baron/count/duke/king/emperor (and the other broad-brush localisations Paradox included) to culturally specific titles. A Breton Emperor, for instance, is now a Gworvrientin (and he’s Breizhat, not Breton). A Coptic Duchess is a Heta (and she’s Kubti, not Coptic). Where possible, I have opted for period-appropriate phases of the language in question (the Chinese titles, for instance, are romanisations of reconstructed Middle Chinese, following Baxter’s reconstruction). These vary from historically attested titles (in western Europe, particularly), to reconstructed titles (e.g. the Middle Chinese titles), to unattested but linguistically plausible titles (e.g. the Baltic group’s titles, which are neologistically formed from attested roots by attested means of word-formation), to entirely imaginative ones (e.g. the titles in the unattested Avar language, which are adjusted from Common Turkic titles based on the sound changes attested in Chuvash, the only surviving Oghur Turkic language).

If you both disagree with the title I’ve used and have a defensible alternative suggestion, let me know. Otherwise, enjoy.

The mod is Ironman compatible, and should be mostly compatible with HIP and CK2+ (some titles may be overridden by other mods which include localisations, but the game will run just fine).

Update: Changed the title of the mod. Added Slovene to the South Slavic localisation group. Added Sardinian. Updated German titles to use Middle High German. Corrected Georgian titles (thanks to @George Bush in the comments).

Update: Updated German titles (thanks to @Viss Valdyr) and changed Lombard to use German title localisation (historical attestation of Lombard suggests that it is not particularly divergent from High German during the game’s time frame). Added Roman titles, approximately mapping Western Imperial titles on to the five-tier feudal structure, as well as more fantastical merchant republic titles, vaguely modelled on Republican era administration.
