The Caldas corvette crisis was a diplomatic crisis between the republics of Venezuela and Colombia, stemming from the entry of a Colombian Navy corvette into the waters of the Gulf of Venezuela on August 9, 1987, where there is no mutually agreed-upon delimitation.
The crisis stemmed from a dispute over the sovereignty of marine and submarine areas, the boundaries of which are still under negotiation between the two nations. Both Venezuela and Colombia have unilaterally delimited the area, leading to risky overlaps in the patrol areas of their navies.
