Mitsubishi Type 89
The Mitsubishi Type 89 IFV is Japan’s domestically developed infantry fighting vehicle, introduced in 1989 to replace older APCs and enhance the mobility and firepower of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF). Designed during the Cold War to counter potential Soviet armored incursions in Hokkaido, it combines troop transport capability with significant offensive power. Armed with a 35 mm Oerlikon KDE autocannon, a 7.62 mm Type 74 coaxial machine gun, and two Type 79 Jyu-MAT wire-guided ATGM launchers, it can engage infantry, light armor, and fortifications with precision. Its dual-feed 35 mm gun allows rapid switching between armor-piercing and high-explosive ammunition, while the ATGMs extend its lethality against heavier tanks.
