AD 610 – Heraclius and the Final Romano-Persian War 1.0
This is a historically accurate empire survival type mod for Total War Atilla. Play as the Roman Emperor Heraclius in the year AD 610 through the final Romano-Persian War.
The Eastern Roman Empire had once stood at the pinnacle of power under Justinian the Great (r. 527–565). His reign was a golden age of ambition and grandeur: the restoration of Rome’s lost western provinces through the victories of Belisarius and Narses, the crowning jewel of the Hagia Sophia gleaming in Constantinople, and the codification of the law into the enduring Corpus Juris Civilis. For a moment, it seemed that the dream of a united Roman world would be fulfilled anew.
But Justinian’s triumphs masked an empire stretched to breaking. The Lombards poured into Italy, the Avars and Slavs surged across the Danube, and the eastern frontier burned under the weight of endless wars against Persia. The terrible Plague of Justinian further sapped the empire’s strength, killing thousands and draining its coffers.
In the decades after his death, his heirs could not preserve the balance. Justin II succumbed to madness under the pressure of war; Tiberius II struggled to defend the frontiers; Maurice, though a capable soldier, was overthrown in AD 602 by mutinous troops who raised the centurion Phocas to the throne. Phocas’ brutal reign plunged the empire into chaos, alienating both the Senate and the army, while offering the Persian king Khosrow II an excuse for renewed invasion. Declaring vengeance for his fallen ally Maurice, Khosrow unleashed the Sassanid armies into Roman territory.
