Description:

⠀

The year is 536. It is an Age of Total War!

Europe is embroiled in the chaos of Germanic Migration. Where there was once Pax Romana we now have a continent of petty kings vying for power.

The Roman Expedition under Belisarius has invaded Italy.

The Frankish kingdoms vie for supremacy in Gaul and domination over their pagan neighbors.

The Romano-British struggle to hold out against the Anglo-Saxon onslaught.

All the while the Lombards and Avars gather strength in the depths of Pannonia for invasion.

Welcome to Anno Domini: 536

Anno Domini 536: The Gothic War is an expansion of Anno Domini 555: Age of Justinian (formerly Age of Justinian AD555). It’s built on the Age of Charlemagne DLC map to zoom in a bit closer to the Italian peninsula as well as Western Europe and Britain. The mod is still under development so some features will be added or reworked in future patches with the community’s help. However, it is completely playable right now with Victory Conditions added for all factions. I’ve also worked hard to ensure stability for long campaigns and multi-player.

In this mod there are 3 major changes to distinguish it from AOJ.

New Start Year and Map
  1. Firstly, the starting year has been rolled back to much earlier in Justinian’s reign to 536AD.
  2. Primarily focused on the conflict in Italy between the Romans and the Ostrogoths, this mod plays out a setting not covered by AOJ and which doesn’t always occur satisfactorily, if at all, in the Last Roman DLC.
  3. There are also 10 other playable factions and unique campaigns scattered across the AOC map, including factions in Ireland, Britain, Gallia, Hispania, and Germania.

New Recruitment System
  1. The next major change from AOJ – and indeed most other mods of Attila – is a radically new (old) recruitment system that harks back to MTW2 and Thrones of Britannia.
  2. The vanilla mercenary recruitment system has been reworked and expanded to become the primary means of recruiting units. Rather than recruiting from buildings in settlements, you now hire the majority of your units directly from local unit pools using the ‘Local Units’ button.
  3. The entire map has been seeded with over 300 separate units in dozens of locally distinct unit pools.

Crunchy Battles
  1. Lastly, battles have also been freshened up with a significant reduction in unit health pools, balanced with reworked damage, armour and shield values.
  2. The result is casualty rates reflect the flow and intensity of combat more closely. The reworked damage, armour and shield values alongside reduced missile accuracy, however, ensure that battles still last longer than vanilla’s.
  3. Furthermore, in good news for the hippomaniacs, impactful cavalry charges remain unchanged from vanilla.

Playable Faction List
  1. Ribuwerer
  2. Regnum Suevorum
  3. Jotur
  4. Regnum Italiae
  5. Myrcna
  6. Saxonia
  7. Sclaveni
  8. Breizh
  9. Regnum Visigothorum
  10. Powys
  11. Expeditio Romani
  12. Ulaid

Bonus content

Reskin of the vanilla rosters in The Last Roman DLC. Plus Berbers, Moors and other minor factions unlocked for custom battles.
Note: due to sharing the pack with The Gothic War, there are some minor effects on battle balance. For example, weaker towers and reduced melee hit chance.
