The Type 055 guided-missile destroyer is the fourth-generation destroyer developed by China. With a displacement exceeding 10,000 tons, it is the largest destroyer class in service with the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN). From its inception, this vessel has been designed with a focus on blue-water fleet operations, emphasizing integrated anti-ship, anti-air, anti-missile, and anti-submarine capabilities. It possesses robust air defense and missile defence capabilities, enabling it to provide a protective umbrella for surface action groups. As a command ship for ocean-going task forces, it features advanced situational awareness, secure communications, and highly automated command and control systems
The Type 055 incorporates numerous technological innovations:
·A stealth-optimized hull with sharp, clean lines for reduced radar cross-section.
·Combined Gas and Gas (COGAG) propulsion providing a maximum range exceeding 5,000 nautical miles and a top speed of 35 knots.
·112-cell HT-1 universal vertical launch system (VLS) capable of cold and hot launches of air defense, anti-ship, land-attack, and anti-submarine munitions
·Integrated sensor arrays mounted in a composite mast structure, featuring next-generation electronic warfare systems; advanced combat intelligence & command system; upgraded "Sea Star" active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar.
·Large-aperture low-frequency hull-mounted sonar array.
·Towed active variable depth sonar (VDS).
·Support for new-generation shipborne anti-submarine helicopters.
With its advanced sensor suite and comprehensive combat capabilities, the commissioning of the Type 055 marks the PLAN’s entry into the global top tier of destroyer capabilities, representing a significant advancement in China’s blue-water naval operation capabilities.
