Papal failures militarily and politically have fractured Papal supremacy across Western Europe, resulting in a disunited and unorganized Christendom unwilling to support large-scale crusades. Enemies of the cross propagate, unchallenged, just on the periphery of the Christian world. Baltic Pagans stubbornly remain on the borders of Europe. Ireland and Southern France stray from the influence of Rome, turning to heresies and false prophets. The Fatimids and the Almohads threaten to eat away at a defenseless Christendom.

For the Anglo-Saxons, the death of Edward the Confessor ignited a succession crisis which brought claimants from across the sea. William the Bastard of Normandy and Harald Hardrada, King of Norway, opportunistically descended upon the English Throne. In the end, Harald emerged victorious. Now the year is closer to 1196, and the isles are once again thrown into disarray; inviting crisis, usurpation, chaos, and for some new opportunity.
