World Wonder · Ruínas de São Paulo
Ruínas de São Paulo is one of the most iconic landmarks in Macau. Its predecessor was Colégio de São Paulo (St. Paul’s College) and Igreja de São Paulo (St. Paul’s Church), founded by Jesuit missionaries and known locally by the Chinese as "Sanba Temple." It was once the most magnificent Baroque-style church in Macau, if not all the East Asia. Unfortunately, in 1835, a devastating fire destroyed both the college and the church, leaving only the church’s façade, foundation, and the stone steps in front. Because the remaining façade resembles a traditional Chinese paifang structure, locals began calling it the "Dasanba Paifang". As one of the iconic symbols of Macau, it not only showcases the achievements of Catholic art in the East Asia but also bears witness to the city’s unique history of East-West cultural fusion.
“In the Sanba Temple (Igreja de São Paulo), there is a wind organ, stored within a lacquered wooden case. It contains over a hundred reed pipes arranged like teeth, connected by silk cords. On the outside, it is pressed with a bellows. When gentle air is blown or drawn into it, a resonant woo-woo sound emerges from the case. All eight tones are expressed in harmony, accompanying the chanting of scriptures, truly a delight to hear.”- Yin Guangren and Zhang Rulin, Records of Macau
