For the Commonwealth
A 1973 based ‘Cold War gone hot’ scenario – defend the GIUK gap with HMS Hermes and HMAS Melbourne
Important note: this scenario was made before the major changes to aircraft preparation times. These missions may be better played with the aircraft prep setting set to either Cheat Mode (which disables it) or Arcade if you want a small challenge. I wouldn’t recommend higher settings for these scenarios as these missions weren’t intended for long timeframes.
HMS Hermes and HMAS Melbourne were undertaking a joint exercise before news of a high magnitude reaches the carrier groups – World War III has broken out after Soviet hardliners gain traction in the government, taking advantage of the chaos of Watergate, the catastrophe of the Vietnam War, and a more aggressive and active role in the Yom Kippur War. All order have been rescinded and the orders have come in from COMASWFORNORTH, take up station in the GIUK gap and prepare for action against Soviet forces.
A high stakes operation set over several days – the joint Commonwealth task force must hold the line.
- HMS Hermes – flagship of the RN task force, providing considerable air defence, strike and ASW power. Use her AEW assets to your advantage.
- HMS Norfolk – primary AAW escort.
- HMS Dido – primary ASW escort.
- HMS Ajax – general purpose escort.
- HMS Londonderry – general purpose escort.
- HMS Warspite – undersea ASW and ASuW asset.
- HMAS Melbourne – flagship of the RAN task force, with A-4G Skyhawks for air defence and strike, her most powerful assets being her S-2G Trackers for a potent ASW capability.
- HMAS Perth – primary AAW escort.
- HMAS Yarra – general purpose escort.
- HMAS Derwent– general purpose escort.
- HMAS Vampire – general purpose escort.
- HMAS Onslow – undersea ASW and ASuW asset.
Beware – the Soviets have a large Submarine fleet and powerful long range anti-ship missiles which they will use to their advantage. Your primary counter is your carrier air wings.
✅ Three fleshed out missions, ranging from easy to more higher difficulty.
✅ Detailed briefings for clear objectives.
✅ Not too many units in missions to help with performance and reducing micro.
