Description:

The 700 Series (700系) is a Shinkansen train type operated by JR West on the San’yō Shinkansen, it was formerly operated by JR Central on the Tōkaidō Shinkansen.

Jointly developed by JR Central and JR West, the 700 series replaced the first Shinkansen train, the 0 series, as well as the 100 series. Designed with a top speed of 300km/h, the type was utilized on the flagship Nozomi service between Tokyo and Hakata from 1999. The 16-car C formation was produced for JR Central’s operations, these were designed to have the same capacity as the 300 series. JR West owned and operated the 16-car B formation as well as the 8-car E formation for services within the San’yō Shinkansen. From 2011 the introduction of the N700/N700A series started taking over Nozomi services, and by 2020 all C formations owned by JR Central were scrapped, a few were transferred to JR West. The B formations owned by JR West also ran on Nozomi services, these ended in 2020. 8-car E formations originally operated on Hikari Rail Star until 2011, when it was supplanted by JR Kyushu’s Sakura services. Since then, the 700 series have been relegated to Kodama stopping trains on the San’yō Shinkansen. Out of the 1328 cars produced, only 128 remain in scheduled services.
