Description:

The E2 Series (E2系) is a Shinkansen train type operated by JR East on the Tōhoku Shinkansen.

A general purpose bullet-train vehicle designed ahead of the Nagano (now Hokuriku) Shinkansen’s opening in 1997, the E2 series was debuted to the world during the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics. The shape of the vehicle’s front was modified to minimize waves caused by the piston effect, a design now common in modern high speed trains. The type would be composed of two variants, the 8-car N formation and the 10-car J formation, with a total of 502 cars produced. From 1998 to 2017 the E2 series operated on all three of JR East’s Shinkansen lines (excluding Mini-Shinkansen), but was retired from the Hokuriku Shinkansen in 2017 and the Jōetsu Shinkansen in 2023. Now operating Yamabiko and Nasuno services on the Tōhoku Shinkansen, the type is scheduled to be replaced by the E5 series by the end of FY2024. All remaining vehicles are 10-car 1000 series J Formations, of which 7 sets are listed as active as of Jan 2025.
