JR East GV-E400 Series / JR東日本GV-E400系
The GV-E400 Series (GV-E400系) is a DMU operated by JR East on regional services in the Tōhoku Region.
Designed as a new general purpose train for unelectrified rural lines in Northern Japan, the GV-E400 series is a diesel-electric vehicle that uses generators to power electric motors. The series is composed of three types: the GV-E400 is a dual-cab and toilet equipped single car, while the GV-E401 and GV-E402 forms a 2-car set with only single cabs and the latter without a toilet. The types can be also coupled together to form a three-car set, therefore offering a great amount of operational flexibility. Since 2018, 63 cars have been produced, composing of 19 single cars and 22 2-car sets. Production remains on-going and JR East had announced plans to build 150-250 total vehicles.
