JR West 227 Series / JR西日本227系
The 227 Series (227系) is an EMU operated by JR West on commuter/suburban services.
Introduced in 2015 for JR West’s Hiroshima Branch, the 227 series is the first brand new rolling stock for the region since the 1980s. The design is based on the 225 series, with a distinct barrier added on both sides of the front, designed to prevent passengers from falling into the gap between trains when coupled. The type was branded as "Red Wing" as the barriers were painted red. All cars are "0.5M", with two motors instead of the usual four per car, and since there are no unpowered cars the formations can be easily changed without affecting performance. The base configuration exists as either 2 or 3 car sets, which can be coupled in various ways up to 8 cars, allowing highly flexible responses to changing demand. The 227 series thus effectively serves as a ‘one for all’ solution for the regional network. Since 2019, JR West had begun introduction of the type into other parts of it’s network such as Okayama and Wakayama regions, these are classified as the 500 and 1000 series respectively. 487 cars have been manufactured to date, with production of the type on-going.
