No Legacy Tech Loss
This mod removes the loss of legacy techs from the Roman Civil Tech Tree. This mod replaces the vanilla technology effects table entirely, and is therefore incompatible with mods that alter the effects of technologies until I can figure out another way to do this. It IS save compatible.
On a gameplay note, the vanilla set-up is obnoxious, non-sensical, and pegs the Romans as a failing faction from the get-go. For instance, why should I forget how to make concrete if Rome is not only surviving but flourishing?
On an historical note, the game seems to suggest that Christianity was responsible for the destruction of Roman know-how and the onset of the "Dark" Ages. In reality, Christianity did much to preserve classical learning though unfortunately much was still lost in the political and material turmoil of the time. I suspect the developers drew from Edwards Gibbon’s "Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire", which includes Christianity as one of the causes for the death of Roman Civilization, but is otherwise a fantastic piece of scholarship. Gibbon, an Englishman, wrote at a time when his nation was steeped in rationalism and anti-Catholic sentiment, and that undoubtedly influenced his work.
