Great Houses: Almanach de Gotha takes its name from the Almanach de Gotha , the authoritative register of Europe’s royal and noble lineages. In the same spirit, this mod centers on dynasties, great houses, and succession, bringing 85 historical royal families and cadet branches from Europe and East Asia into Victoria 3, where your new dynastic chapter can be written.

Inspired by Royal Court by Bordeaux Jeaux

Dynastic Changes

Sic semper tyrannis! Habsburg Spain and Napoleonic Austria? You can play as almost any historical royal dynasties with Great Houses, even forming new ones like Windsor and Orléans-Braganza.

Marriage & Succession

Marriage unions were less common in the Victorian age due to growing nationalism, while marriages for political alliances were seen more. However, a country’s ruling dynasty might still change under certain succession laws that eventually allow other houses to inherit the throne through a queen regnant mother. With Great Houses, you can control this with 4 different universal succession laws and some flavored content for specific countries.

Diplomacy

Want to influence other countries’ dynasties? You can replace the ruler in your subject, turning them into crown lands and indirectly personal unions. Moreover, through diplomatic plays, you can depose other countries’ monarchs or even take their throne and forming a personal union. But be careful, aggressive plays result in big infamy penalties.

Character Presentaion

Each royal family now gets a family trait that denotes their family name, coat of arms, and background. To enhance an immersive experience, all characters generated with Great Houses are flagged historical with the great UI visual. Actually real characters now get an "Actually Historical" modifier.

Japanese Content

As descendants of Amaterasu, most Shōguns and Daimyōs originated as cadet branches of the Imperial family. In a European sense, they also have, to an extent, a rightful claim to the Imperial throne. Become emperor as any of these families and choose your own era name, or prevail during the Honorable Restoration as a new Shogunate. 7 new shogunates are added to the game, including the historical Kamakura (Minamoto) and Muromachi (Ashikaga) Shogunates, see details [docs.google.com]. British Content

In 1902, the House of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha succeeded Hanover as British Monarchs and changed its name to Windsor in 1917 amongst German animosity. As any branches of the Wettin Dynasty, proclaim house of Windsor in Great Britain when you go against Prussia. Or become the historical House of Cambridge as any of the Württembergers. A royal decree is available for the Windsors if the current monarch or heir is a female to ensure future sitting monarchs will bear the name Windsor.

Italian Content

By birth, Charles Albert is of the Savoy-Carignano family. After he succeeded the Sardinian crown in 1831, Carignano became the de facto senior Savoyard line and gradually became it. In Great Houses, a more concrete scenario is placed. Whichever of the 3 Savoyard families unifies Italy will be able to proclaim the senior line.

Dutch Content

A royal decree is available for the Orange-Nassau family if the current monarch or heir is a female to ensure future sitting monarchs will bear the name van Oranje-Nassau.

Portuguese & Brazilian Content

Maria II married a Saxe-Coburg-Gotha in 1836, founded the House of Braganza-Saxe-Coburg-Gotha to ensure all offsprings will bear the name Bragança. This is set in place at game start. A Braganza Queen marrying a Orléans will also create the House of Orléans-Braganza, historically in 1864.
