Designed as a part of the broader G3 platform, the MP5 quickly became one of the most iconic submachine guns of the 20th century, owing to its appearance and its widespread use by police and military forces through the world. Originally, it used a straight magazine, which proved unreliable. The gun also has certain quirks shared with other HK weapons of the time; for example, a fully loaded magazine cannot be inserted with the bolt closed, at the risk of damaging it through pressure.
