VERESKOVO
Vereskovo is the heart of Veresovia, a region where history and modernity intertwine in a strange and contradictory pattern. Here lies the nation’s capital — the city of Vereskovo, once envisioned as a showcase of the socialist future, but now turned into a symbol of decline, Soviet legacy, and clumsy attempts to “catch up with the civilized world.”
The region borders POSADKOVO — that very backwater where life has long since stood still. Yet the country’s center is hardly different: the shine remains only on paper, while in reality this is the same place where the past refuses to let go of the present.
An old railway runs through Vereskovo, once connecting the country with neighboring Soviet republics. Today, rare freight trains still travel the rails, but the stations are abandoned or have turned into makeshift markets. Along the tracks, one can see crooked warehouses, burnt-out workshops, and rusting tankers with peeling paint.
Beyond the capital stretch wide fields and shelterbelts — straight lines of planting left over from collective farm days. The local villages barely survive: some people have left to seek work elsewhere, others trade at the market in moonshine and potatoes. Asphalt roads gradually give way to broken dirt tracks leading to half-ruined village clubs, first-aid posts, and schools where only two of ten classrooms are still in use.
The city of Vereskovo has preserved the appearance of the Soviet era: gloomy apartment blocks with peeling paint, gray squares with monuments to old leaders, dusty parks with shattered fountains. On the main streets, a few vehicles can be seen, among them still the old Zhigulis and trucks, while in the courtyards time seems to have stopped — rusty pull-up bars, abandoned garages, and playgrounds with iron structures that have outlived more than one generation.
Vereskovo carries within it the spirit of all Veresovia — a strange feeling that time has frozen. Here one can see both the remnants of former grandeur and the filth of everyday life. This is a region where people always have stories about the past, but never a clear vision of the future.
