Inmate – Start As A Prisoner [B41] [B42]
I’m now focusing on my own larger game development projects, and unfortunately that means that I won’t have the time to support this mod any longer.
It should still work correctly with [B41] and earlier builds of [B42], but compatibility with future updates isn’t guaranteed.
Thanks to everyone who played, supported, and shared feedback on this mod. Feel free to reuse or update it going forward if you’d like (credit is appreciated!).

Are you a fan of the Bethesda prison start? Have you always wanted to play as a lone fugitive inmate, completely oblivious to the Knox Event? Then give this mod a try!
This mod allows the player to start the game as an inmate character at one of multiple unique prison spawn points.
It includes a custom inmate profession, exclusive items, additional clothing options, and hidden loot.
- Muldraugh Police Station (Indoor cell)
- West Point Police Station (Indoor cell)
- Louisville Detention Center (Outdoor gardens)
- Kentucky State Prison – aka Rosewood Penitentiary (Outdoor gardens)
- [B42 Exclusive] Brandenburg Detention Center (Outdoor gardens)
WARNING: Outdoor spawn points will put you at the mercy of the zombies, which may jump on you immediately. Be ready to fight or flight.
The inmate profession is a reworking of the original Burglar:
- Burglar trait
- +2 Nimble
- +2 trait points
Choosing the inmate profession grants access to additional clothing options during character creation
The new inmate jumpsuits are upgraded versions of the original prisoner boiler-suits, offering improved bite and scratch resistance equivalent to the denim overalls. This allows role-players to keep using the jumpsuits after spawning, without needing to switch to better clothing items immediately.
There are two jumpsuit versions depending on the season you spawn in:
- Orange Inmate Jumpsuit: Increased insulation, ideal for winter months.
- Khaki Inmate Jumpsuit: Reduced insulation, ideal for summer months.
These jumpsuits are only available at spawn and cannot be found elsewhere in the world.
Inmate characters will spawn with a custom annotated map pointing to a hidden stash they put away before their imprisonment.
Follow the red "X" on the map to find some extra loot!
Spawning a player character inside the major prison buildings disables all nearby indoor zombie spawns, removing one of the game’s greatest challenges. I have chosen outdoor spawns for these locations in order to keep the mod as lore-friendly as possible.
I am currently testing indoor prison spawns in B42 and will implement it if/when I get it working correctly. You can find more information on the pinned discussion threads.
If you choose an indoor spawn, you should have some "Guard Keys" in your inventory, which will allow you to open the cell door and avoid any potential soft locks inside the buildings.
Yes, you should be able to spawn in the new areas with any profession. However, the additional clothing options and hidden stashes are only available for the inmate profession.
This mod is envisioned as a vanilla-friendly starting scenario, in which the inmate character has taken advantage of the Knox Event to escape.
This means that compatibility with other popular mods such as Day One and Week One is not guaranteed and will most likely not be supported in the future.
There shouldn’t be any incompatibility issues with most other mods. Some functionalities might stop working if you have installed mods that change the tiles around the custom spawn locations and hidden stashes, that make substantial changes to the character spawning mechanics, or that rework the base map codes. Let me know if you encounter any bugs and I’ll do my best to fix them.
This mod should work perfectly fine on multiplayer servers. Being a "starting" mod, some functionalities are only triggered for new games and characters, so starting a new save is advised.
I might not be able to update the mod for B42 as frequently or as rapidly as some of you might like. If you want to play a stable version of the mod, I suggest sticking with B41 for now.
Mods are built from passion and plenty of spare time. Supporting your favorite mod creators makes projects like these possible.
