Description:
Dynamic Pain System: Immersion and Consequence

This is a complete system designed to replace the abstract concept of a health bar with visceral, consequence-driven reactions to injury. When your character is hurt, the damage is processed instantly, building a separate resource: Trauma. This Trauma level dictates the intensity of all physical and psychological effects you suffer. Surviving combat means managing the pain, not just hiding to regen.

Core Mechanics: Pain, Adrenaline, and Movement

Damage generates Combat Pain. This pain slowly decays over time, but you cannot simply "shake it off." You must find cover and rest—crouching or standing still speeds up recovery.

Low-level pain triggers an Adrenaline Rush. Your movement speed is temporarily boosted as your character pushes through the initial shock. This initial shock state can also now grant minor, temporary HP regeneration if the `dps_adrenaline` convar is active.

But cross the threshold into true injury, and your movements become impaired.

  • Crippling Injury: High pain causes your run speed to plummet, leaving you exposed and sluggish.
  • Agony and Shock: At critical levels, your speed can drop to a quarter of normal, forcing you to crawl to safety.

Visceral Trauma System

In addition to general pain, the script tracks specific types of injury to create unique effects. This modular system ensures that a fall injury feels completely different from an incoming mortar shell. Upon taking high initial damage or sustaining high pain levels, your character will now play grunts of pain and screams.

Shellshock and Gunfire Trauma
Gunshots fired close by (including by the player) generate a lingering, fading Shock event. The intensity of this Shellshock is multiplied by your existing Gunshot Trauma level.

Fall and Impact Trauma
A bad fall will lead to a severe fear of heights!

Loss of Control and Hallucinations

As your Trauma nears max capacity, the system strips you of control, simulating extreme stress and psychological breakdown. Pain levels reaching "Mortal Wounds" can now cause the player to slowly take minor health damage if the `dps_bleedout` convar is active.

  • Uncontrolled Aim: Intense, spasmodic aim drift makes lining up a shot nearly impossible.
  • Spasms: At random moments, your character may involuntarily input movement commands, forcing you to step out of cover or turn the wrong way.
  • Involuntary Actions: The pain can trigger spasms that force a reload, a misfire, or a viewpunch accompanied by player screams.
  • Psychological Break: Passing the 110-point threshold causes menacing shadow figures to briefly materialize in your periphery. Look directly at them, and they vanish.

Compatibility and Performance

This script is highly optimized. It relies solely on native GMod functions and is designed to work with all popular gamemodes, or for realism-based singleplayer! A critical fix was implemented to safely handle or bypass Disposition checks on non-NPC entities, ensuring robust compatibility with various hostile entities like zombies.

Requires no external content.

Configuration and Community Support (V1.1)

The system offers extensive configuration via ConVars and a new in-game GUI Menu (dps_menu) which includes community credits:

  • dps_enabled – Toggle the entire system on/off.
  • dps_mult – Global multiplier for damage-to-pain conversion.
  • dps_decay – Adjust the overall pain decay rate.
  • dps_sway_mult – Control the intensity of aim and camera sway.
  • dps_trauma – Toggle the advanced Trauma (Gunshot, Fall, Burn) system on/off.
  • dps_voices – [NEW] Toggles all character grunts of pain and screams on/off.
  • dps_arcade – [NEW] Toggles an arcade mode that significantly reduces control loss, input inversion, and movement restrictions from high pain.
  • dps_bleedout – [NEW] When active, pain at "Mortal Wounds" will cause the player to take damage.
  • dps_adrenaline – [NEW] When active, the player receives minor, temporary HP regeneration during the "Shock" pain state.

Add this script to your server and make combat a truly terrifying, consequential experience.
