Covey Rider System
The Covey Rider System brings the role of the Vietnam War Forward Air Controller (FAC) into Arma 3, allowing a single player to fully operate and manage an OV-10 Bronco in a historically inspired way.
This mod enables one player to:
Pilot the OV-10 manually or switch to autopilot loiter
Dynamically adjust loiter radius, altitude, and direction
Utilize enhanced binocular-style zoom from inside the cockpit
Seamlessly operate with the OV-10 aircraft from the Nickel Steel mod
The system is designed to let players focus on observation, coordination, and battlefield awareness, rather than juggling multiple crew roles.
Historical Background
During the Vietnam War, FACs—commonly flown with “Covey Riders” within MACV SOG—flew OV-10 Broncos over denied areas such as Laos and Cambodia. Their mission was to locate enemy forces, mark targets, coordinate air strikes, and provide overwatch for SOG recon teams operating deep behind enemy lines. Flying low and slow, Covey Riders were the critical link between ground teams and air power, often operating under intense enemy fire.
Purpose
The Covey Rider System aims to recreate that experience by giving players the tools needed to act as a lone FAC—circling the battlefield, directing attention, and maintaining situational control from the air.
Whether supporting recon teams or conducting independent observation missions, this mod is built for players who want to experience the unique and dangerous role of a Covey Rider without having to be a skilled pilot or accompanied by one.
