The Stridsvagn 103, abbreviated as Strv 103 and often referred to as the “S-Tank,” is a Swedish main battle tank developed in the late 1950s and early 1960s by Bofors and the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration. It is notable for being the first production main battle tank to feature a turretless design. Instead of a traditional turret, the Strv 103 aims its main gun by adjusting the vehicle’s suspension and hull orientation.
The Strv 103 was designed around Sweden’s defensive strategy, emphasizing a low silhouette, strong frontal armor, and high survivability in ambush positions. Its autoloaded gun allows for a reduced crew size and a compact internal layout, making it a unique and highly unconventional tank in armored warfare history.
