Description:
Eurocentric Institutions

Eurocentric Institutions rebalances the institution system to prevent late-game global equality and to bring a more historical and uneven pattern, the Eurocentric one.

In vanilla, the institutions tend to diffuse regularly and with ease until the entire world shines the same neon green color by the 18th and 19th centuries. It is not uncommon to see railroads in the depths of the Congolese jungles or South Asia before European colonization. This mod fixes that.

What the mod does

• Reworks institution spread so that Europe actually diverges
• This is done through tier-based cultural diffusion-where locations, based upon culture group- receive institutions at very different speeds. This is done through varying coefficients for different institutions and culture groups.
• Applies time-gating to certain institutions outside Europe to prevent implausibly early adoption (e.g. Renaissance in MENA)

Early institutions like Banking and Professional Armies spread without much issue. However, as time goes on, and Europe continues to diverge– first, the Renaissance– then, the Printing Press, then the Scientific Revolution, and so forth, these institutions will be hampered severely in their ability to spread to non Tier A or Tier B civilizations. Certain exceptions like Artillery and Global Trade exist, as I try to follow a historical pattern

The end result is a world where:

• Western Europe leads intellectually
•The peripheries of Europe catch up within time
• Gunpowder empires adopt military techs selectively and unevenly
• Europe is truly ages ahead of the other civilizations. It’s in the name of the game!

There are four game rules to control this:
• Western European Primacy — Default. Western European superiority above all.
• European Primacy — Tier B –> Tier A; Europe will be pretty much equal.
• Continental Diffisuion –> Tier Offset +1; All of the world (except for Natives and African Tribes) will be bumped up a tier
• Eurasian Institutions –> Tier Offset +2; All of the world will be bumped up 2 tiers

Design Philosophy

This mod prioritizes historicity over balance. It’s not even close to being balanced. That’s the point. This mod was created with the help of AI.

Status

-Planned features:
Westernization mechanic

Compatibility

• Should be compatible with most mods that do not directly alter institution definitions, spread mechanics, or culture groups.
• Compatible with existing savegames; can be removed at any time

Notes

Check the FAQ for more specific info

I’m open to suggestions. Think a culture group belongs in a different tier? Does an institution need different multipliers? Let me know.
