Near-realistic tech tree
Welcome to a comprehensive overhaul of the research tree designed for Workers & Resources: Soviet Republic. This mod aims to provide a more realistic, historical, and significantly more hardcore gameplay experience, stretching from the year 1900 to the modern era.
Progressive era system:
You start in 1900 with almost everything locked. Forget about heavy industry and national power grids.
- Early game: you are limited to horse-drawn transport, simple manufactories instead of large factories, and basic infrastructure.
- Mid game: through research, you will unlock mechanization, party organization, preventive medicine, oil study, electrification, nuclear energy, etc.
- Late game: the tree culminates in 5 major endgame technologies (advanced industry, advanced construction, container standards, etc.), each requiring 5000 workdays to research.
Be prepared for a difficult start. You will face several logistical crises immediately:
- Electricity limitations: high voltage lines and transformers are initially locked. You only have access to a basic power plant with a very short supply radius. You will be forced to build it within city limits and deal with the resulting pollution.
- Heating & Survival: Only simple wood-fired heating plants are available, also with a short radius. Surviving the first winter is possible (I managed with a village of 500 people), but it requires micromanagement of workers and strict resource control.
- Water & Sewage (hardest difficulty): pipes are locked. You must rely entirely on water trucks (technical services). Note on wells: wells in recommended mod act as buffers with a natural recharge rate. Once filled, they generate water for a while, but you will need a massive fleet of technical service vehicles to keep even a small town supplied.
- The productivity death spiral: infrastructure and production buildings are less efficient in the early eras. If citizen happiness drops, their productivity falls, leading to poor service in shops and hospitals, which causes a population crash. Monitor happiness closely!
Recommendations: it is highly recommended to start on a map with pre-existing populated cities. This gives you a buffer of manpower to survive the initial harsh conditions and unforeseen circumstances.
IMPORTANT: this mod requires manual file installation and subscribing to all dependency mods for the assets.
Step 1: subscribe to this mod and all required items in the collection.
Step 2: locate the mod folder on your PC (C:Program Files (x86)SteamLibrarysteamappsworkshopcontent7841503640601676).
Step 3: MAKE A BACKUP of your original media_soviet and WRSR Steam workshop folders.
Step 4: copy the contents of the media_soviet and workshop folders, replacing files when prompted.
This mod is tuned for a specific balance. Using other mods that add buildings not included in my research.ini may break the progression (they might be unlocked immediately, ruining the challenge). Use other mods at your own risk. To integrate other mods properly, you must manually add them to the research.ini file.
This is Version 1. I plan to update and expand the tree based on feedback.
Tech descriptions are injected into the EN and RU localization files (String IDs 55700 to 55773).
If the game updates and uses these IDs, text descriptions for technologies may disappear or conflict.
Use ‘The Timemaster’ mod to change the starting date to 1900.
Unfortunately, I couldn’t find a way to block certain structures, such as bulk and liquid cargo stations, airport terminals, ship scrapping facilities, heliports, and harbors. If you know how to help with this, I’d be very grateful and will definitely include the fix in future updates.
