Better Proximity And Control
I made this for myself, and figured I’d put it up incase anyone else wanted to use it. The idea behind this is I thought it was stupid to only have one source of proximity in an entire empire. With the exception of bailiffs which can only be built on rural locations (why?) and special buildings. I also thought it was a little too easy to spread proximity, especially through naval and ♥♥♥♥♥♥ ports. By the age of discovery the entire northern coast of Europe from Brittany to Denmark was 80-90 control minimum in my game which was weird, and made me want to play in weird ways like spam cities on the coast and destroy every city inland.
So I made this with the goal of changing the method of proximity spread from road and naval presence, to through bailiffs. I think the biggest upside to my way is it doesn’t leave you with good locations being invalid because you don’t have a good way to spread proximity to them which feels big bad.
Things it does:
# Changes bailiffs #
– Bailiffs can now be built only in towns and cities
– You can build an extra bailiff per location for each new age. (The local proximity stacks)
– Price per bailiff goes up by a lot for each additional one you stack.
# Big nerf to proximity spreading #
– Every level of road has been nerfed by 5 proximity.
– Maritime presence has been nerfed by 5 proximity.
– Ports have been nerfed by 40 proximity.
# Pound Lock Canal #
– Don’t need to be built in cities to prevent feeling like you need to build a line of cities.
While the port nerf may seem like a lot, ports reduce proximity on a percentage basis. So building up ports on a naturally good port will still leave you with a port that costs 0 proximity to move through. But it makes the crap ports twice as bad. The goal here was I want proximity to spread through my big port cities, not through every coastal location.
I’m pretty sure this is insanely unbalanced if you spam the bailiffs everywhere despite their high cost. I plan to make bailiff maintenance exponentially increase as you build more in the future, but I got tired of working on mods and want to finish my game. After playing a bit I honestly might nerf roads and naval more. Still noodling on it.
