AKA The Canadian Army. Replacing their improved Second World War uniforms with an all-new shirt, parka and pair of pants known collectively as the Combat Uniform. The 1964 Pattern Webbing it was adopted alongside did not feature ammunition pouches as six C1 magazines could be stored in the pockets of the combat clothes, ammo pouches from the previous 1951 pattern equipment were sometimes jury rigged to the new webbing. American produced M1 helmets and flak vests were worn alongside the Canadian made uniforms and web gear.
Pattern 1982 Webbing was fully rolled out alongside the adoption of the C7 Assault Rifle and C9 Light Machine gun, this time featuring storage for the soldiers ammunition, The old marks of Combat uniform are still worn and M1 helmets are worn in all three US camouflage pattern covers (Mitchell, ERDL, Woodland.) The boonie style Combat Cap is also re-adopted in the early 1980s, and Canadian soldiers would be seen frequently with the soft cover going forward.
Wearing the Extreme Cold Parka and an all white camo oversuit and helmet cover, arctic "mukluk" boots, and the Extreme Cold Hood. All of the CAF’s arctic equipment was produced in Canada and represented Canada’s role in defending NORAD instalations in the Arctic and preventing the potential Soviet advance through Alaska and the Canadian Territories.
Peacekeeping was one of the Canadian Armed Forces primary roles during second half of the 20th century, taking part in every United Nations peacekeeping mission up to 1989. Canadians wore the typical UN blue M1 helmets and made frequent use of American body armour.
Following the end of the Cold War and several controversies regarding Canadian peacekeepers partaking in human rights abuses, Canada’s role in peacekeeping was strongly diminished, though they still had a significant presence during the wars in former-Yugoslavia. The escalating deadliness of modern warfare led to Canadian troops being issued on a limited scale American produced PASGT helmets and Canadian modified PASGT vests.
