The War Diary is a mod that creates pure atmosphere and immersion. We conducted extensive research and read many original Kriegstagebücher (war diaries) to provide an authentic experience. The mod allows you to write your own entries, but it also adds a number of automatically generated entries. In the end a realistic war diary is created, similar to how it was written on board during wartime.
Please be aware that this is a pretty big mod and there may be bugs that we didn’t find while testing.
- Write your own entries in the war diary
- Automatically generated entries
- Adjust which entries should be automatically created
- Statistics about the patrol
- Immersive crew ranks
- Daily status on weather, days at sea, and torpedo reserves
- Ship sinkings
- Course changes
- Diving and surfacing, along with depth in meters
- Speed changes
- Docking/undocking
- Injured and sick crew members
- Damages and flooding
- Crew promotions
- Torpedo launches, hits, and failures
Thanks to T&C D.Stirling for this one:
Use your PG UP PG DN keys (use the hotkeys for "Changing UI Scale")to change the diary size
You can drag the KTB and the Career selection (career selection needs to be dragged on the outer few papers) with either left or right mouse button
Once the mod is properly loaded, a new button appears in the right icon bar that shows the war diary.
The first time you click on the war diary button, a career selection screen will open. This allows you to create multiple careers and maintain several parallel war diaries.
To create a new career, click "New Career."
Then, you can name your career.
Once a career is created, you can create a war diary for it by clicking "New War Diary."
This can also be renamed. Then, a field with statistics about the selected patrol will appear on the right side.
By clicking "Edit War Diary," you can access the war diary itself.
Initially, you’ll see the front page of the diary, which contains some information and configuration options.
In the checkboxes, you can edit the automatic generation of all entries. Disabling a checkbox does NOT delete any existing entries in the war diary!
You can then start recording your own stories about the experiences of your crew and submarine during patrols.
When the journal is closed, all contents are saved, so you don’t need to click save every time.
You can edit an entry by clicking on it
Meaning of the icons from left to right:
- One page back
- Save entries
- Back to career overview
- Load entries
- Next page (if entries are available)
- Close war diary
You can adjust all entries and UI text by modifying the localization files.
To avoid overwriting these files when the mod is updated, you can create a custom file named "custom.yaml" in the mod’s workshop folder.
Simply copy the entire content of the respective "de.yaml" or "en.yaml" into this file and modify the text as needed.
Example:
TORPEDO_HIT: "Torpedo Hit"
can be changed in "custom.yaml" to:
TORPEDO_HIT: "Ship Hit"
Then, select "Custom" as the language in the game, and the adjusted entries will be loaded.
The custom.yaml needs to be created in the mod folder: Steamsteamappsworkshopcontent4948403363327068
No new game is required. Simply load your old career and start writing.
Your war diaries are stored in the following folder:
"C:UsersAppDataLocalLowDeep Water StudioUBOATModskriegstagebuchJournals.yaml"
Many thanks to Urfisch. His ideas and research helped create an authentic experience in this mod. Additionally, the textures and UI graphics are by him. Thanks also for pushing the project forward with me and for the ongoing discussions and improvements we’ve made together.
Huge thanks to Ragulsor[www.twitch.tv] as well for showcasing the mod
