Iltis

The Iltis is a military off-road vehicle produced by Volkswagen for the West German armed forces.
The German military approved the design in 1977 and ordered 8,800 units. The first batch of prototype vehicles was delivered at the end of 1978. Production began in the summer of 1978, with the first 200 units delivered in November; by the end of 1979, approximately 2,000 units had been delivered, including 310 to the German Air Force and 20 to the German Navy. Although most of the vehicles produced were four-door convertibles, body styles varied for ambulances, anti-tank units, artillery reconnaissance, command, and field communication units.
