Description:

Play through Halo 3 with lore accurate weapon damage and health + a few extras. Legendary is recommended but don’t be afraid to drop difficulty if Legendary is too hard. You won’t miss anything.

Recommended Difficulty
  • Recommend Legendary (Lore damage used as base but Legendary balanced further around fun)

Difficulty Tuning
  • Easy: Less damage and more ally health.
  • Normal: Lore accurate weapon damage but is too easy.
  • Heroic: Slightly increased damage for a better challenge.
  • Legendary: Sharper accuracy, faster firing speed, slightly higher enemy damage and enemy count for an increased challenge.

How Lore Damage Was Achieved

This mod adjusts weapon and entity damage/health values to align with Halo lore, based on extensive research across novels, comics, and other sources.

  • Lore weapon damage varies widely (depending on the author and dramatic intent).
  • To balance this, values were averaged into consistent ‘middle ground’ figures.
  • Final weapon damage vs. unit types is included in an image with the mod.

New Weapons, Vehicles, Enemies
  • Brute Plasma Rifle: Fires in rapid five-shot bursts. Delivers high damage output but risks overheating with sustained fire.
  • Halo Infinite Skewer: Invented prior to the events of Halo 3. Fires single spike that does catastrophic damage to anything it hits.
  • Halo CE Fuel Rod Cannon: Included to diversify gameplay.
  • Halo CE Assault Rifle: Assault rifle has been restored with original sounds, damage values, etc.
  • Halo CE Magnum: Included in all it’s .50 cal TNT tipped round glory.
  • Halo Wars Sparrowhawk: Part of the UNSC military at the time of Halo 3.
  • Halo Reach Revenant: Part of the Covenant military at the time of Halo 3.
  • Halo 4 Lich: Included for a special set piece. Part of the Covenant military at the time of Halo 3 although rare.
  • Grunt Spec Ops Rank: Special rank of lightly shielded grunt that support Riot brutes in key sections of the game.
  • Riot Brutes: New special rank of brute used in key sections of the game.
  • Plasma Lance Hunters: Encountered throughout the campaign that wield plasma lance weaponry. Can be differentiated by the glow of their cannon.
  • Elite Honor Guard: New Elite rank.
  • Sentinel Guardian: Semi easter egg ally/enemy based on concept art from Halo 3.
  • Flood Juggernaut: Encountered throughout the campaign.

Notable Campaign Changes

This modification rebalances and refines nearly every campaign level in Halo 3 to bring the experience closer to lore accuracy while maintaining a fun and challenging sandbox. Enemy composition, marine presence, and weapon loadouts have been adjusted to reflect the narrative more faithfully. Below is an overview of key level changes:

  • Sierra 117: No major changes.
  • Crows Nest: Greater ODST and Elite presence within the base.
  • Tsavo Highway: Additional vehicles, revamped encounters. Additional Elite presence.
  • The Storm: Elite ally support.
  • Floodgate: Major increase to the flood numbers and encounter design. Keep them alive if you want to make it through.
  • The Ark: Elite ally support. Covenant motor pool setpiece and camp outside the cartographer. Added Hunter encounters. Elite drop pods support you during the final fight. First time encountering grunt spec ops and riot brutes.
  • The Covenant: Elite phantom colors corrected. Can use Sparrowhawk or Banshee instead of Hornet in all sections. Can use a Lich plasma lance to destroy Scarabs. Truth has much more troops guarding him.
  • Cortana: Features machine gun turret breakout section as nostalgic music plays in the background.
  • Halo: Fight with allies to get to the top of the control room. Have the option of calling in Guardian support in the final stand section.

Gameplay Tips
  • The player still has regenerating health but regeneration time was increased significantly.
  • Flood are much faster and much more aggressive than in vanilla. Don’t let them get in close and overwhelming you.
  • The scale of conflict in Halo 3 is far larger than in CE, featuring heavier infantry presence, especially Elites. Marines provide stronger support than in vanilla but are vulnerable to concentrated precision fire.
  • Try out all weapons. With lore accurate balance, even weapons like the Needler can be surprisingly effective, even without supercombines (few things in real life could stand being impaled by 3 large shards that explode and the lore supports this).
  • Shotguns have 7x the range of vanilla.

Non-Damage Lore or Balance Adjustments
  • Carbine: Fire rate increased. Zooms much farther.
  • Shotgun: Extended effective range and tighter pellet spread, making it a more reliable close-to-mid range weapon.
  • Brute Plasma Rifle: Fires in rapid five-shot bursts. Delivers high damage output but risks overheating with sustained fire.
  • Flood Combat Forms: Attack more aggressively with increased weapon fire frequency but reduced accuracy to reflect their reckless fighting style. Rely heavily on relentless melee attacks if allowed to close distance.
  • Explosives (Grenades, Fuel Rod, Rocket Launcher, Wraith Mortar, Scorpion Shell): Expanded blast radii. Visual effects in Classic graphics adjusted accordingly.
  • Ghosts: Increased speed to reflect their role as agile scout and attack vehicles in the lore.
  • Banshees: Faster and capable of firing while boosting, reflecting their strafing tactics and lore-accurate maneuverability better.
  • Enemy AI: Engage at longer ranges with significantly increased rate of fire, creating more challenging encounters.
  • Allies: Improved combat effectiveness through longer bursts and extended engagement ranges.
  • Hunters: Now fire fuel rod blasts instead of the vanilla continuous beam unless they are of the plasma lance variant.

Deliberate Lore inaccuracies

Several lore inaccuracies are acknowledged but deliberate for various reasons:

  • Vehicle Durability: Lore-accurate vehicle health made the campaign unreasonably difficult in testing due to plasma weapon effectiveness and encounter design. The standard Halo 3 system (vehicle health tied to driver health) was retained and the damage resistance of all occupants increased.
  • Ally Health: People really enjoyed fighting alongside allies that are capable. Due to encounter design and AI, allies have health and shields that are not lore accurate to improve the player experience.
  • Movement Speed: Spartan and Elite speeds were left unchanged. Lore-accurate movement felt unnatural in-game and risked breaking mission triggers.
  • Player health still regenerates. I don’t have the knowledge needed to implement a visible health system with med-packs like in Halo CE.
  • Arbiter cannot die.
