AGOT: The Knighting Ceremony
"In the name of the Warrior, I charge you to be brave. In the name of the Father, I charge you to be just. In the name of the Mother, I charge you to defend the young and innocent."
Expands the knighting interaction in CK3’s A Game of Thrones mod with immersive, multi-step ceremony event chains. Instead of a simple popup, knighting a squire now presents two paths and a third may find you on the battlefield. And as of Version 4.0, the North observes its own traditions: followers of the Old Gods can now swear warriors as Thanes before a heart tree.
Perform the anointing in a sept before the eyes of the Seven. A septon bears the holy oils as you lay your blade upon your squire’s shoulders and speak the three charges: the Warrior’s charge to be brave, the Father’s charge to be just, and the Mother’s charge to defend the innocent. Conclude with the words every knight dreams of hearing: "Arise, Ser [Name], a Knight of the Seven Kingdoms." Grants piety and a strong opinion bonus. The weight of the sacred rite may inspire bravery, justice, or true faith in the newly anointed knight. Costs prestige and gold, only available to landed lords (counts and above).
"Before the Old Gods who have no name, I bind you to their sight. You shall keep their ways, guard their groves, and remember that winter is always coming."
The North has its own warrior tradition now. Followers of the Old Gods can swear a warrior as a Thane, the northern equivalent of knighthood, through a dedicated Offer Thaneship interaction. No sept, no septon, no oils. Just the weirwood, the silence, and the steel.
The ceremony takes place before a heart tree in the godswood, with three sacred vows to the Old Gods, to your lord, and to the North itself culminating in: "Rise, Thane. The Old Gods have witnessed your oath. From this day until your last day, you are sworn."
Grants the new Thane trait (+1 Diplomacy, +2 Martial, +2 Prowess, +0.1 Monthly Prestige, +5 Same Faith Opinion, +5 Vassal Opinion), with a chance to gain Brave during the vows and Zealous from the weight of swearing before the Old Gods. Converting away from the Old Gods costs double piety. Once sworn, "Thane" appears as a proper title prefix in the character UI, alongside Ser, Maester, and Septon. Available to Old Gods followers of at least county tier. Completely separate from the knighthood system.
Just knight them, similar to vanilla. For the lazy! Still costs prestige; knighthood is never truly free.
After winning a battle, your commander may have the opportunity to knight a worthy soldier on the field or swear them as a Thane, if you follow the Old Gods.
For followers of the Seven, this is a standalone event that replaces the base AGOT post-battle knighting complete with the full three charges spoken under open sky. Grants prestige and a moderate opinion bonus. Costs prestige and piety as the septons are not pleased you skipped the proper rites.
For followers of the Old Gods, the battlefield variant swears a Thane under the open sky with abbreviated vows. "The Old Gods watch from every tree."
Callous or sadistic characters may opt for a dismissive dubbing instead. Both events can only fire once per year to keep them feeling special.
- Trait chances tied to each charge (brave from the Warrior, just from the Father, zealous from the full sacred rite)
- Thane trait and title with custom icon. "Thane" displays as a real title prefix in the character UI, the northern parallel to Ser
- Opinion modifiers that reflect the weight of the ceremony
- Stress impacts based on personality
- Full AI logic so NPCs choose contextually appropriate paths
- Knighting Ceremony Costs: A game rule with three tiers (No Extra Cost, Moderate, Expensive) so you can tune the balance to your liking
- Lowborn Surcharge: Knighting a lowborn costs significantly more prestige. The nobility does not look kindly on commoners rising too easily
- Dynasty Renown: Knighting a member of your own dynasty grants renown, rewarding you for investing in your family’s legacy
- Requires A Game of Thrones (AGOT) mod for CK3
- Overrides the AGOT knighting interaction and post-battle knighting on_action
- Hooks into AGOT’s title display system (customizable_localization, character data effects, naming triggers). Other AGOT submods that modify the same files will conflict. Load this mod last
- Old Gods followers see Offer Thaneship. Faith of the Seven followers see Offer Knighthood. No overlap
- Patch for Automated Squire Training is here: Knight Ceremony/Auto Squire Compatch
Inspired by George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire. Most notably, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
