Inspired by EU4’s ‘Third Odyssey: Back to the Motherland’

In Exiles of the Middle Kingdom you play as Lei Zihao, an AU scholar turned explorer who believes he has pinpointed the location of Fusang – the mythical world tree located far east of China.

Lead your people to Fusang and form Yuǎndōng, the Republic of the Far East. Champion the Fusangrén culture. Colonize the frontier and experience a unique event-driven storyline!

To start: Simply play as Great Yuan and you’ll get the first story event ‘The Great Navigator’ in the first two months of gameplay. Feel free to ignore Great Yuan’s probable/impending collapse while you set up your voyage.

Currently, the mod is in an early alpha state and is missing a majority of the content beyond the initial setup phase. However, it is still fully playable in its’ current state. Exiles of the Middle Kingdom adds:

Yuǎndōng, the Republic of the Far East

  • Start as Lei Zihao – an explorer in Great Yuǎn – and choose who is worthy of joining your Great Voyage.
  • Colonize the sprawling valleys and redwood forests of California, made easier by a (barebones, but functional) event-driven colonization system.
  • Custom localization for 30 locations in the Califonia region. (and more coming soon!)
  • Custom localization for Yuǎndōng’s estates

Upcoming Changes:0.2 Shinsekai Update

  • Added Shinsekai, the Japanese Republic of the New World.
  • Added native tags to the Yokut Valley; currently missing any content but they will play a bigger role in future story developments.
  • Improved colonization sequence for Yuandong, implementation of basic colonization sequence for Shinsekai.
  • Added basic faction influence system; currently very barebones and very placeholder, to be replaced with a proper system featuring a functional UI. Certain choices will extend or lessen the influence of the Shi, Shang, and Senglu, opening up new events, options, and outcomes.
  • Expanded startup sequence – a longer voyage featuring over a dozen new events, and additional options to resolve these new problems dependent on conditional factors such as minorities present or faction influence.
  • Overhauled location density in the California region – over 30 new locations have been added to better match the density of the East Coast.
  • Added two new unique RGOs, Fusangren Silk and Redwood. Redwood is used in the manufacturing of Redwood Carpentry, and Fusangren Silk is a valuable trade commodity. Players can choose one of these two RGOs after reaching a 10 location threshold, dependent on previous event choices.
  • Fixed early food struggles. Upon landing in Yuandong, the capital’s RGO will be changed from lumber to rice. Certain colonization events will now also offer the player the option to invest in different RGOs (in locations where they may be applicable.)
  • Fixed early income struggles. Post-landfall modifier gives the player a modest early income that can be improved (or reduced) depending on setup choices.
  • Fixed Lei Zihao’s name displaying backwards as ‘Zihao Lei’

  • Is it compatible with XYZ?
  • I don’t play with any other mods so I can’t guarantee any compatibility. Feel free to develop and share your own patches if you care to do so. The modding scene for EU5 is still quite young so working on compatibility with other mods is not a priority for me at the moment.
  • I speak Mandarin! Why is the localization all weird?
  • I don’t speak any Chinese languages and have relied on online translators with (probably) dubious accuracy to come up with semi-realistic names for locations. If you speak Mandarin and are interested in helping improve the localization of the mod, feel free to reach out.
  • I don’t see Yuandong on the map anywhere! How do I play?
  • Just start as Great Yuan and you’ll get the event ‘The Great Navigator’ in June of 1337. From there, you’ll begin the setup process, allowing you to configure your journey to Fusang.
  • There’s not a lot of content after the first few years! What do I do?
  • A valid question, but in its’ current state, I’d treat it like any other EU5 nation, just one with unique starting circumstances. Once the story is fully implemented, all stages of the game will be more fleshed out – but for now, you’ll have to make do with what’s there.

v0.1.0 – Public Alpha Release

  • Initial release.

  • Mod by apljee.
  • Thank you to anyone in the EU5 mod co-op who has helped me since starting this project.
  • Huge thank you to ComradDoge in the EU5 mod co-op for the wonderful description banners.
  • Special thank you to @napoleon_bonaparte for their help in mapping, and to @Zorange for their early support and idea contributions.

If you’re interested in being added to this section, feel free to leave a comment. Whether it’s development, localization, writing, or simply helping to improve the authenticity of the mod, help in any area would be appreciated.

Note: this story/mod is not exactly plausible, nor does it make any attempt to be – it’s just my attempt at making a fun, story-driven mod inspired by one of my favourite EU4 mods. If you’re looking for a more grounded mod with similar themes, I would suggest Egon’s Saga of the Vinlanders. Hope you enjoy, and thanks for checking it out!
