Description:
Trial of the Seven

"The gods have judged. Seven against seven. Let the Father above judge who is guilty and who is innocent."
This submod adds the ancient Andal tradition of the Trial of the Seven to A Game of Thrones (AGOT) for Crusader Kings III. When a single combat is not enough, the accused may invoke the most sacred form of trial by combat in the Faith of the Seven.

What is a Trial of the Seven?

A Trial of the Seven is a rarely invoked form of trial by combat where each side must field seven champions. Fourteen men take the field and the gods decide who walks away. In the lore, this ritual has been called upon only a handful of times in Westerosi history, most famously at the Trial of the Seven at Ashford Meadow, where Ser Duncan the Tall stood accused by Prince Aerion Targaryen.

Features
  • Prison Interaction: Imprisoned characters who follow the Faith of the Seven can demand a Trial of the Seven from their captor through a dedicated prison interaction.
  • Integrated into Existing TBC: During a standard trial by combat, both the accuser and the accused can demand a Trial of the Seven when choosing their champion.
  • Champion Selection: Six champions per side are automatically drawn from knights, courtiers, family members, and sympathetic members of their liege’s court, ranked by prowess.
  • Narrated Melee: The opening clash of fourteen warriors is described through atmospheric narrative text as the field thins and the chaos of battle unfolds.
  • Real Duel Engine: The trial culminates in a decisive one-on-one duel using CK3’s actual single combat system, complete with the full blow-by-blow duel window if your character or champion is involved.
  • Lore-Accurate Lethality: Champions can survive, be wounded, or be killed during the melee, each champion’s fate is rolled individually and displayed in the aftermath summary.
  • Custom Death Reason: Characters slain during a Trial of the Seven receive a unique death reason on their character screen and death recap.
  • Full AGOT Integration: Uses AGOT’s prison system, opinion modifiers, and crime consumption on verdict. Winning as the accused releases you from prison and clears your charges. Losing as the accused adds the appropriate penalties.
How It Works
  1. Get imprisoned (or imprison someone who follows the Faith).
  2. As the prisoner: right-click your captor and select "Demand Trial of the Seven."
  3. Watch as fourteen champions take the field in the sight of the Seven.
  4. The melee rages. Champions fall. The field narrows.
  5. A decisive duel determines the verdict: guilty or innocent.
  6. Review the aftermath; see which champions survived, which were wounded, and which gave their lives.
Requirements
  • Both accuser and accused must follow the Faith of the Seven
  • The demanding side must have access to at least six eligible champions
  • Must not already be involved in a Trial of the Seven (5-year cooldown)
Compatibility
  • Requires A Game of Thrones (AGOT) mod for CK3
  • Must be loaded after AGOT in your mod load order
  • Overrides two AGOT events: agot_trial_by_combat.1000 (accuser champion selection) and agot_trial_by_combat.1001 (defender champion selection) to add the inline option. These may need updating when AGOT releases major patches.
  • All other files are additive, no other AGOT files are modified
AI Behavior

AI characters will very rarely invoke a Trial of the Seven on their own; only particularly brave and zealous imprisoned characters will consider it. When offered a Trial of the Seven, AI captors weigh their traits (brave, zealous, just vs. craven, cynical) and the strength of their available champions before accepting. This keeps the event rare and dramatic, just as it is in the source material.
Inspired by George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire, and most notably, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
