Description:

The F-15C is a classic large air superiority fighter and one of the core assets of the United States Air Force. The MSIP (Multi-Stage Improvement Program), launched in February 1983, was an upgrade designed to modernize all F-15 variants in USAF service at the time to adapt to the evolving combat environment.
MSIP consisted of two phases: MSIP I focused on the F-15A/B, MSIP II focused on the F-15C/D. MSIP I was later canceled in full due to inefficiency, and the F-15A/B were gradually retired, with only a small number retained for flight testing and as anti-satellite weapon carriers. MSIP II was widely implemented, with its most significant upgrade being the integration of the PACS (Programmable Armament Control Set), which enabled the launch of AIM-120 missiles. The final 43 F-15s under MSIP II were equipped with the AN/APG-70 radar—identical to that of the F-15E—before being standardized to the AN/APG-63(v)1. Later production F-15s received the AN/APG-63(v)2 and (v)3 radars, which featured Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) antennas, marking a qualitative leap over previous versions. Through continuous upgrades, the F-15C has remained a mainstay of USAF air combat due to its high performance and relatively low operational cost compared to fifth-generation fighters. Iin the 21st century, the F-15C continued to undertake extensive air combat patrols, intercept and identification missions, and aerial deterrence and expulsion tasks. In 2024, the last F-15C squadron withdrew from the U.S. military’s Kadena Air Base in Japan, and the U.S. Air Force officially announced the retirement of the F-15C one year later. Currently, only a small number of upgraded F-15Cs remain in service with the National Guard.
