Improved Early Morning Post-Ravenholm [Map Replacement]

Back when I made my sandtraps mod , I went to my usual modding while keeping everything gatekpt because I’m built like that. Then I went on gamebanana only to see a request to improve on UnknownPleasures’ Early Morning Post-Ravenholm made by SleepyNotDead. Back then, I just dismissed it until I randomly remembered it existed the other day.
I can’t remember the exact details and what exactly it requested to improve on since it’s been trashed like six months ago without reason. Even though I vaguely remember very few details, I thought I could give it a shot to see how I could improve that mod. I don’t even want any bounty points from this and I rarely ever use gamebanana for me to care.
Probably my last of these orange sky map replacements. I love the orange atmosphere, can’t you tell? And honestly, they were kinda lazy but I’m surprised I’ve got this much support over them. So I know I’m not alone.
This mod replaces the last map of the Ravenholm chapter (d1_town_05) and changes its setting to match an orange sunrise while everything else stays the same to 20th anniversary update standards. That includes a different lighting, fog, skybox and recompiled with HDR support pretty much what you come to expect.
Of course I can’t ignore that this mod is very similar to the one I’ve already mentioned, so the changes here are based on what I remember from that one request and my own personal tweaks. Here’s what’s actually different from the other mod:
- The 3D skybox was described as looking like yellow piss. I just recolored it to make it somewhat fit with the sky.
- The tree cluster didn’t blend well with the industrial stacks. This happens because the fog distance for the fog_controller and the sky_camera didn’t match and it’s actually like that in vanilla. The mod simply didn’t fix it and it looked more obvious due to its yellow fog, so I fixed it.
- The sun was located somewhere else compared to vanilla, but the shadows remained the same which looked bad. I rotated the skybox and tweaked the shadows.
- The map was recompiled with better lighting and it now uses the day01_07 skybox texture instead of 08. Similar to how it was done in renovated maps. You should now see that sweet ol’ HDR flash when coming out of the tunnel like in vanilla. The original mod did have HDR but it was barely noticeable.
