Bellicose – 2nd Boer War Skins
Hello one and all, and welcome to a new pack for the Bellicose project – an amalgamation of many of my older projects into one unified series. In this pack you’ll get to play with soldiers of the Second Boer War, which had a variety of names – perhaps most notably the South African War, as it appears on various British medals of the period. The Boers and the English had been in a tumultuous relationship for decades by the point this conflict had occurred, however unlike in the previous outbursts of fighting, the Boers had managed to receive quite modern kit – and even a few uniforms for a select few. British Lee-Metfords and Lee-Enfields would meet their match against a determined Boer force equipped with some of the latest Mauser-produced rifles, many of which were supplied by Germany in their determination to disrupt Britain’s colonial conquests. The conflict managed to transform the British Army with the rapid adoption of camouflage practices – such as aprons to cover kilts and officers dressing down so they’d be able to avoid the accurate rifle fire the Boers were so excelled at.
British Forces
- English Mounted
- A soldier approximating Rimington’s Guides, which were later called Damant’s Horse – they earned the nickname ‘Tigers,’ as they were quite effective at chasing down their enemy. He sports a pair of spurs, a bandolier, and some unusual vestiges that would come during the conflict – his hat features the Damants Horse badge but also leopard fur, something this unit seemed to sport. His tunic also features chainmail shoulderstraps, although the real Rimington Tigers I don’t believe would’ve worn this feature I figured it was a unique piece of uniform that should be depicted in the mod.
- English Soldier
- A standard British soldier during the outbreak of the war, he represents the Middlesex Regiment and is found sporting the Slade-Wallace valise set, a wonderful haversack for his personal belongings, and a lovely foreign service helmet adorned with the Middlesex Regiment badge and a cover.
- Highland Soldier
- Much akin to his above, however he represents a highland unit – the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders. I wasn’t able to fully determine what badge they would’ve worn on their pith helmets and so figured just a bit of their tartan would do the trick. He has forgone the haversack in favor of a backpack to carry his belongings in. He wears a camouflage apron over his kilt. His issue tunic also features highland-pattern pockets compared to the regular pleated pockets of his English counterparts.
Boer Forces
- Boer Agyterryer
- The Boers and their foes employed numerous native troops, oftentimes for use in support roles but some were also equipped and participated in battle. This gentleman represents a native African whom the Boers have employed to serve alongside them – however he was never treated as a true equal to his so-called allies. He wears a motely civilian outfit, including a pair of corduroy trousers, a jacket, a quite dashing waistcoat, and of course a captured bandolier, most likely looted off of British dead.
- Boer Kommando
- Majority of Boers did not wear standardized uniforms and instead wore their regular civilian attire. This could include a near unlimited range of options, however the man here wears a rather simple getup. He wears a bandolier as was commonplace alongside a canteen to keep him motivated under the heat of the mighty African sun. Unlike his Agyterryer counterpart, his undershirt is a simple red plaid button-up.
- Transvaal Staatsartillerie
- There were very few Boers who had uniforms, and even less so who would have worn these uniforms into battle. This soldier, however, depicts a member of the Transvaal Staatsartillerie. He wears the special jacket with blue trim, a pair of dapper riding boots, and the special buckle and bayonet which were theorized to have been shipped to the Boer Republics – however due to the outbreak of war, very few had arrived. Alongside these, he wears a very unique hat – one that appears in a few contemporary photographs. It’s similar in vein to the Austro-Hungarian ‘feldkappes’ worn, in fact being near identical with exception to the badge on the front which says ‘Z.A.R.’ (South African Republic) much like his buckle. There is currently only one known surviving example of this hat.
